Below are some technology tools that I've used to help me, as a non-Mandarin speaking parent, as my child learned Chinese/Mandarin.

Pleco - Chinese Dictionary

[iOS & Android]

Tip: Save the character as a bookmark (+) top right to develop a study guide.

[Browser Based]

Tip: Click the brush to write in the Chinese character to define.

Click the >> to get more options including hearing the word.

iOS [after setup, hold the globe to change the keyboard input]

  1. Open "Settings"
  2. Tap "General"
  3. Tap "Keyboard"
  4. Tap "Keyboards"
  5. Tap "Add New Keyboard..."
  6. Tap "Chinese (Simplified)"

Android  [after setup, hold the globe to change the keyboard input]

Download the Google Pinyin Keyboard - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.inputmethod.pinyin

  1. Open "Settings"
  2. Tap "Language & input"
  3. Tap " Current Keyboard"
  4. Tap "Choose Keyboards"
  5. Turn on "Google Pinyin Input"
