About Everyday Mandarin

Making kids love learning Chinese

Everyday Mandarin began in 2012 with one after-school class of three students at Tobias Elementary in Daly City. Today we run Mandarin programs at six school sites and across the Bay Area, serving more than 350 students each year.

Our story

Chinese school, done differently

Our founder’s own experience with Chinese school as a child was not a happy one. He set out to build the opposite: Mandarin programs that kids look forward to, where encouragement replaces pressure and the language feels relevant to their lives.

That idea still guides everything we do, from how we train teachers to how we design each lesson.

How we teach

What makes our classrooms different

Positive reinforcement

Teachers encourage and reward progress. Students who feel successful want to keep learning.

Trained for American classrooms

Our native-speaking teachers are trained in Western classroom management and in child safety and mandated reporting.

Placed by level

Students learn with peers at their Mandarin level, so every child is challenged without being lost.

Curriculum: YCT (Youth Chinese Test) materials are our main curriculum, taught in Simplified Chinese. Our Daly City program also uses the Zhongwen series.

Our mission

Engaging, relevant and fun

We make learning Mandarin engaging, relevant and fun, and we build a community of students, families and teachers who share a love for Chinese language and culture.

A nonprofit program

Everyday Mandarin is a program of Higher Level Learning, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (Tax ID 84-1793017). Our scholarship fund helps students whose families couldn’t otherwise afford tuition.

Join our team

We’re always looking for caring, energetic Mandarin teachers and after-school staff.
