How to Choose a Mandarin After-School Program: 10 Questions to Ask

Everyday Mandarin after-school program at Holy Child and St. Martin in Daly City

The short answer: the best Mandarin after-school program is one your child can attend several times a week, that groups students by Mandarin level, and that is taught by native-speaking teachers who make class fun. Use the 10 questions below to compare programs before you enroll.

10 questions to ask any Mandarin after-school program

  1. How many days a week is Mandarin taught, and for how long? Language grows with frequency. Several short classes a week beat one long one.
  2. How are students placed? The best programs place by Mandarin level, not just grade, so beginners and fluent speakers each get the right challenge.
  3. Who are the teachers? Ask whether teachers are native speakers and whether they are trained in classroom management for American students.
  4. What curriculum do you use? Look for a clear progression of vocabulary and skills, such as YCT-aligned materials. (See YCT vs HSK explained.)
  5. How much speaking time does each child get? Songs, games and conversation should be a big part of class, not just worksheets.
  6. How do you communicate with families? Regular updates and progress feedback help you support learning at home.
  7. What else happens in the afternoon? Full-afternoon programs may include snack, homework time and enrichment, which can replace separate childcare.
  8. Are staff trained in child safety? Ask about background checks, mandated reporter training and pickup procedures.
  9. Is it at my child’s school? On-campus programs remove the afternoon commute and make attendance much easier.
  10. Is financial help available? Ask about scholarships, sibling discounts or programs such as ELOP.

Red flags

  • All ages and levels taught together in one group
  • Little or no speaking practice
  • No clear way to see your child’s progress
  • Your child dreads going

For real progress, aim for at least two to three sessions a week. Children in our five-day programs get the most practice.

Often, yes. Level-based groups make it easier for new students to join when space is available.

Is there a Mandarin after-school program near me?

If your child attends West Portal, Commodore Sloat, Francis Scott Key, Sunset or Guadalupe Elementary in San Francisco, or lives near Daly City, see our school sites. Schools without a program can contact us about starting one.
